GENERAL PURPOSE

Reporting to Fleet Services, this role involves executing complex and skilled mechanical tasks across a diverse range of automotive equipment, including school buses, county government vehicles, police cars, utilities department vehicles, and fire and rescue units. Proficiency in operating specialized tools is essential for success in this position.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Conducts fundamental mechanical tasks with precision.
  • Handles tire replacements and responds to roadside service requests.
  • Troubleshoots and services injector systems for both gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Repairs or rebuilds brake systems, including air and hydraulic setups.
  • Executes engine tune-ups utilizing industry-standard diagnostic tools.
  • Addresses electrical issues by repairing or replacing components such as starters, generators, alternators, and more.
  • Evaluates light and heavy-duty vehicles to ensure adherence to Virginia State Inspection Standards.
  • Assists with shop upkeep, custodial duties, and vehicle pickup/delivery as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of high school or possession of an equivalent credential.
  • Extensive background in servicing a wide range of automotive, truck, and power equipment—both gas and diesel, domestic and imported, across various makes and models.
  • Holds or is eligible to secure a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
  • Holds or is eligible to obtain a valid Virginia State Inspection License within 90 days of starting employment.
  • ASE Certification is highly desirable.
  • ASE/EVT Certification is preferred for candidates working as Fire & Rescue Technicians.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Expertise in the techniques, processes, tools, and machinery involved in diagnosing and repairing passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, construction equipment, and various maintenance machinery—both domestic and imported models.
  • Proficient in ABS brake systems and advanced computer-controlled braking technologies.
  • Knowledgeable about ignition systems (including older models) and modern computer-integrated systems.
  • Skilled in maintaining cooling components, such as water pumps, radiators, heating systems, fan relays, and heat pumps.
  • Experienced with electrical setups, including computer relays, switches, and related systems.

Skills:

  • Proficient in operating and utilizing workshop tools and equipment, including drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, drum and rotor resurfacing tools, welding and cutting devices, advanced tire changers, computer wheel balancers, computer diagnostic analyzers, A/C service units, R12 and R134a A/C recovery and recycling systems, antifreeze recycling units, multimeters, and additional testing instruments.

Abilities:

  • Maintain detailed logs of repairs and services, track time spent, and document parts usage for the parts department.
  • Interpret and follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrating proficiency in English grammar, usage, and spelling.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team setting to achieve shared objectives.
  • Plan and execute tasks independently with strong organizational skills.
  • Manage several projects concurrently while adhering to all deadlines.
  • Exhibit consistent effort and enthusiasm, ensuring high standards in both the quality and volume of work.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment can be inside or outside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are subject to extreme heat and/or cold, and frequent exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is moderate work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
