GENERAL PURPOSE

Reporting to Fleet Services, this role involves tackling advanced and technical mechanical tasks across an extensive array of vehicles and equipment, including school buses, county government fleets, police vehicles, utility department trucks, and fire and rescue units. Proficiency in using specialized tools is a critical requirement for this position.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Executes foundational mechanical tasks with skill and accuracy.
  • Replaces tires and provides timely assistance for roadside service requests.
  • Identifies issues and repairs injector systems for both gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Services or completely refurbishes brake systems, including air and hydraulic types.
  • Conducts engine tune-ups utilizing industry-standard diagnostic tools.
  • Handles electrical system repairs, such as swapping out components like starters, generators, alternators, and more.
  • Assesses light and heavy-duty vehicles to ensure they meet Virginia State Inspection requirements.
  • Supports shop operations with custodial tasks, vehicle pickups, and deliveries as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of high school or possession of an equivalent credential.
  • Demonstrates substantial expertise in servicing a diverse range of automotive, truck, and power equipment—spanning various makes and models, both domestic and imported, powered by gas or diesel.
  • Holds or can acquire a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License within 90 days of starting employment.
  • Possesses or is eligible to secure a valid Virginia State Inspection License within 90 days from the hire date.
  • ASE Certification is highly valued.
  • ASE/EVT Certification is a preferred qualification for those specializing in Fire & Rescue Technician roles.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Proficient in the techniques, tools, and processes for diagnosing and repairing passenger cars, trucks, buses, construction machinery, and assorted maintenance equipment, covering both domestic and imported models.
  • Skilled in working with ABS brake systems and advanced computer-controlled braking technologies.
  • Knowledgeable in both traditional ignition systems (early models) and contemporary computer-based systems.
  • Experienced in servicing cooling and heating components, including water pumps, radiators, fans, relays, and heat pumps.
  • Adept at handling electrical systems, including computer relays, switches, and related mechanisms.

Skills:

  • Skilled in the application and management of workshop equipment, including drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, drum and rotor resurfacing tools, welding and cutting apparatus, state-of-the-art tire changers, computer wheel balancers, diagnostic analyzers, A/C servicing units, R12 and R134a recovery and recycling systems, antifreeze recycling equipment, multimeters, and various testing devices.

Abilities:

  • Track repair and service details, calculate time spent, and log parts usage for the parts department’s records.
  • Comprehend and act on verbal and written instructions, with a solid grasp of English grammar, usage, and spelling.
  • Collaborate harmoniously within a team setting to achieve collective targets.
  • Arrange and carry out tasks autonomously with efficiency.
  • Juggle multiple assignments while ensuring all deadlines are met.
  • Display consistent dedication and energy, delivering high-quality and productive results.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment can be inside or outside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are subject to extreme heat and/or cold, and frequent exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is moderate work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
