Master Automotive Technician – Summary

Functions as a skilled-level technician who can perform diagnoses and repairs in all areas, in addition to being specialized areas of repair and who has previously worked as a B-Class general service technician.

Master Automotive Technician – Essential Duties

  • Performs tasks as detailed in the repair order with efficiency and accuracy, following dealership and factory standards.
  • Diagnoses the cause of malfunctions and carries out repairs.
  • Coordinates with the parts department to acquire necessary components.
  • Tags and stores parts of the job under warranty or as requested by customers.
  • Inspects the assigned vehicle to determine if additional safety or service work is necessary or advised.
  • Informs the service advisor promptly if extra work is required, if the outlined work is unnecessary, or if repairs cannot be completed within the agreed time.
  • Records all conducted work and recommendations on the repair order.
  • Conducts road tests of vehicles when needed or delegates to the test technician.
  • Engages in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events.
  • Stays informed about manufacturer technical bulletins.
  • Oversees the work of any assigned apprentice technicians.
  • Notifies the supervisor of any machinery defects or malfunctions.
  • Keeps customers’ vehicles clean and informs the service advisor immediately of any changes to the vehicle’s appearance or condition.
  • Maintains a tidy shop area.
  • Is responsible for all dealership-owned tools and manuals, ensuring they are returned to their proper place and in good condition.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal and OSHA Right-to-Know, etc.
  • Uses all tools and equipment safely.
  • Immediately reports any safety concerns to management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Master Automotive Technician – Education and/or Experience

  • Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Master Automotive Technician – Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Master Automotive Technician – Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
