Mobile Auto Mechanic – Fleet Technician II

The City of Colorado Springs is ready to welcome a Mobile Auto Mechanic – Fleet Technician II to the Support Services team!  As a Mobile Auto Mechanic – Fleet Technician II you will provide on-site mobile repairs and preventative maintenance services to the City’s fleet vehicles. This may include inspecting fleet vehicles, estimating damage of vehicles involved in collisions and normal wear and tear, completing repairs and preventative maintenance to vehicles in a mobile/field environment.

Hourly Salary: $28.54 – $35.27

Job Type:Full-time; eligible for overtime hour/pay, when necessary
Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday; tentatively 7:00AM – 3:30PM
Work Location: Mobile/field environment

This Position Includes:

  • Repairs, cleans, replaces, installs and modifies defective, missing, or malfunctioning components of mechanical, hydraulic, fuel, electrical, braking, steering, pumping, and other related systems of assigned vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Performs a wide range of automotive inspection, maintenance, and repair duties
  • Modifies, tears down, repairs and reassembles major automotive components and assemblies including gasoline engines, automatic and standard transmissions, differentials, and front-end assemblies
  • Calculates an accurate cost estimate of repair work as assigned including labor, supplies, and parts costs
  • Ensures that all work activities adhere to all applicable federal, state, local, industry safety standards, and emissions mandates
  • Operates a mobile repair vehicle to perform needed repairs and maintenance in the field; lubricate, repair and/or diagnose malfunctions of vehicles
  • Installs a variety of parts and equipment on assigned vehicles including lights, trailer hitches, and generators
  • Perform annual DOT safety inspections
  • Perform Diesel opacity testing
  • Other duties include ensuring safety, customer care, service and communication, and continuing training and education

Relevant Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Best practices for the inspection and repair of assigned vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook programs and fleet software applications Ability to: 
  • Exert 50-100 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs. frequently; or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly
  • Read manuals, understand diagrams and interpret video

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
  • Experience: Threeyears of full-time, professional engine repair, fleet maintenance or related experience.

Other requirements:

  • Possess or obtain upon hire a non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
  • Possess or obtain upon hire, a valid non-probationary Colorado CDL Class A or B not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges. (NOTE: Current CDLs must be registered with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) drug and alcohol clearing house at https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov.)
  • Successfully completed a minimum of two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification Tests
  • Possess or obtain within 12-months of hire, a Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • A vocational certification or associate’s degree in automotive, mechanics, or a closely related field
  • Experience in relation to fleet tracking and work scheduling
