Summary

The position entails fixing both manual and automatic transmissions in vehicles while complying with the quality and timing standards of the dealership and manufacturer. It requires specialized training tailored to the manufacturer’s products.

Essential Duties

  • Performs transmission repairs as outlined in the repair order, with precision and adherence to dealership and factory time standards.
  • Diagnoses the cause of malfunction.
  • Dismantles and repairs the transmission unit.
  • Inspects the vehicle for additional safety or service needs.
  • Promptly informs the service advisor if additional work is needed, if the prescribed work is unnecessary, or if the repairs cannot be completed.
  • Coordinates with the parts department to obtain necessary parts.
  • Safeguards and labels parts if they are under warranty or if requested by the customer.
  • Reinstalls the repaired transmission, refills fluids, and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Conducts or assigns road tests of the vehicle when necessary.
  • Documents completed work and recommendations on the repair order.
  • Attends training sessions sponsored by the manufacturer.
  • Stays informed about manufacturer technical bulletins.
  • Reports equipment defects or malfunctions to a supervisor.
  • Keeps customers’ vehicles clean and reports any changes in appearance or condition to the service advisor immediately.
  • Maintains a tidy shop area.
  • Is responsible for all dealership-owned tools and manuals, ensuring they are returned to the correct location and in the same condition as they were received.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal and OSHA Right-to-Know.
  • Uses all tools and equipment safely.
  • Immediately reports any safety concerns to management.
  • Performs other assigned tasks.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

GM Manufacturer and/or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (required and recommended)

  • Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • (willingness to achieve) Brakes Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Electrical/Electronic Systems Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Engine Performance Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Engine Repair Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • (willingness to achieve) Heating and Air Conditioning Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Manual Drive Train and Axle Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • (willingness to achieve) Suspension and Steering Certification for Auto/Light Truck
