Summary

This role involves repairing manual and automatic transmissions in automobiles, adhering to dealership and manufacturer quality and time standards. It necessitates training specific to the manufacturer’s products.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts transmission repairs as specified on the repair order, with precision and adherence to dealership and factory standards for time allowances.
  • Identifies the cause of malfunction.
  • Dismantles and repairs the transmission unit.
  • Inspects the vehicle to ascertain if further safety or service work is necessary.
  • Informs the service advisor promptly if there is a need for additional work, if the prescribed work is unnecessary, or if the repairs are unfeasible.
  • Coordinates with the parts department to secure required parts.
  • Preserves and labels parts if covered by warranty or upon customer request.
  • Reinstalls the repaired transmission, refills fluids, and adjusts as needed.
  • Performs road tests of the vehicle when necessary or delegates to a test technician.
  • Records the work completed and recommendations on the repair order.
  • Participates in training sessions sponsored by the manufacturer.
  • Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins.
  • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Ensures that customers’ cars are kept clean. Notifies service advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle.
  • Keeps shop area neat and clean.
  • Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals. Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as when they were received.
  • Understands, keeps abreast of and complies with federal, state and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know etc.
  • Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Reports any safety issues immediately to management.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

GM Manufacturer and/or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (required and recommended)

  • Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • (willingness to achieve) Brakes Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Electrical/Electronic Systems Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Engine Performance Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Engine Repair Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • (willingness to achieve) Heating and Air Conditioning Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • Manual Drive Train and Axle Certification for Auto/Light Truck
  • (willingness to achieve) Suspension and Steering Certification for Auto/Light Truck
